Your phone as a 3D scanner!

Microsoft is already thinking ahead, and they've created an app,MobileFusion that lets you use your phone, even without wifi connection, to take a pictures of a 2D object that scans and renders the multiple images to create a 3D image from it, right there on your phone! Tinkercad gives you this functionality from your PC with an internet connection, so this advance brings 3D-ification to the real world. Think: you're a biologist in the field, at a remote location and you want to build your artifact 3D model right then and there to send to fellow researchers so they can see each angle from a single image. Check out this white paper for the full academic overview. It's still in development for cross platform release (it may be available later this fall), so I couldn't download it to check it out. But take a look at this video for a demo.
