Is xyz as easy as 1-2-3?
I dug a bit deeper this week to learn more about the WalMart xyzprinting $349 desktop 3D printer. There are no consumer reviews yet posted directly on the WalMart site. But I did find a really informative review on cnet that gets into a great overview about the importance of calibration in 3D printing. In short, a very positive review of the da Vinci Jr. desktop model, despite the fact you can only use xyz filaments to create a project (color is white only, cost $25-30 per spool), and the printer can only output small projects (5.9" x 5.9" x 5.9" max) which can take up to 10 hours to complete. This review also has some great tips, such as applying a thin layer of school glue to the print surface bed to keep projects from slipping as the printer extruders add layers, especially for projects with height. Overall, I think there's a good chance I'll purchase this printer to use for this coming SEP session. Despite color limits (you can always paint your printed project) and output size (the beauty of combining 3D printing with CAD software is that you plan a project by assigning each student in the class a different component to build for assembly to make the larger single class project), I think its affordable hands-on nature is worth the risk.
