We're at the start of a tech revolution!

What a great time to be teaching 3D design and printing; a colleague recently recommended the new M3D 3D printer as an affordable personal device and it looks like the rest of the industry agrees. And very cool that social media makes this innovation possible (see: the company used Kickstarter to raise capital to develop and got the product to market super quick). At this point, I almost have too many choices in the $300-400 range ;)

Also, an exciting app recently released from Autodesk 123D, Catch, a free download you can make to your computer or phone that allows you to create a 3D image from multiple 2D camera shots taken and rendered directly on your phone; wow! I've downloaded the app and will play around with its functionality over the next couple of weeks to decide about adding it to my SEP lesson plan. The Catch website has a bunch of really helpful tutorials, so make sure to check them out before you start taking pictures. But still, even with lots to watch for in the process, pretty amazing how far the personal 3D making industry has come.

  1. Uh oh.. I'm rescinding my interest in M3D printers. Digging deeper reading customer feedback, posted on their Kickstarter page no less (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/m3d/the-micro-the-first-truly-consumer-3d-printer/comments8,000+ comments, mostly very negative), finds lots of problems both in ordering and basic product performance. I'd recommend staying away until they work through issues.
