3D printers are everywhere!
In the past 3 months, I've located a second public 3D printing resource, at our newly renovated Northside Public Library here in Charlottesville Va. Recently opened, they include now a "Maker Space", complete with access to a 3D printer. Since it's so new, I couldn't find much in the way of online details, but I'll run over this week, check it out, and let you know how submitting and printing a project works. Additionally, cloud 3D printing services are an option:
3D Hubs -- a resource that lets you search for nearby 3D printing vendors. However, searching for resources near to Charlottesville, found it returned only one located in Elkton Va, which left off our local library resource, so I think you'll only find "for profit" type resources here.
Sculpteo -- a for profit vendor that will take an stl file you've created, including fixing it where needed, and print your project and ship it to you. This seems like a "consumer" service, in that they tout on their site "you don't even need to know programming". Well, you guys know how I feel about this, but it's worth opening a free account and checking out how commercial 3D printing works.
Stay tuned! It looks like my goal to create and print a 3D project this summer is off to a great start and I'm looking forward to figuring out how to add this component to SEP 2016!
