Our first flight of App Inventor projects is up and running! We've got 13 Saturday Enrichment class phone apps created, a bunch more to go for next week. Due to the age of the creators (8 and 9 year olds) and the short amount of time (10 hours total for 32 kids), I approached by creating 3 programming templates ("find", "giving - down", "giving - up" games) in App Inventor and used these templates to export and upload the Scratch 2.0 sprites they created into their corresponding App Inventor project. Very impressive to see how easy it is to manipulate the App Inventor programming and design to see kids make changes "on the fly" to the existing templates I set up. Next, I'll be working on how to make their project visible offline, without publishing to a commercial platform. And, Scratch 2.0 does a nice job of making it easy to explain global and local variables so you can demonstrate how computer science uses algebra. Check out our latest class video for an overview.
